Watermelons are grown on fertilized sand, and they have to be grown a little above the ground. For this reason, slightly raised beds are made. They have to be grown in rows, and these rows have to be 10 feet apart. Small watermelons are implanted in these beds.
Pollination is the key factor for watermelon plants. After implantation of these tiny melons, it will take about a month for the vine to grow and spread about eight feet. This crop needs to be harvested for the next five months. The new watermelons appear about three months after implantation.
While choosing a watermelon, make sure that it is symmetrical. Do not choose a watermelon which has cuts or bruises on it. A ripe watermelon will have a fairly shiny surface.
If you want to confirm whether or not the watermelon is ripe, then all you have to do is thump it a little bit. If the sound is hollow and the melon has enough weight, then you may conclude that it is ripe.
