Vitamin D3 is a major form of vitamin D, which has several important health benefits. Find out more about the benefits of this vitamin, in this story.
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which can be of five types - vitamin D1, D2, D3, D4, and D5. Vitamin D2 or ergocalciferol, and vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol are the two major forms of vitamin D. Vitamin D2 is produced by the invertebrates, like fungus and plants in the presence of ultraviolet radiation of the sunlight, while vitamin D3 is produced in the skin of the vertebrates in response to ultraviolet B light of the sun.
This vitamin can be found in certain foods, such as salmon, tuna, sardines, cod liver oil, and eggs. Cholecalciferol is the inactive form of vitamin D, which is converted to calcidiol by the liver. Calcidiol is then converted to calcitriol by the monocytes or the kidneys. Calcitriol is the active form of vitamin D3. Vitamin D has several health benefits, some of which are discussed below.

Benefits of Vitamin D3

Vitamin D or D3 is mainly concerned with the absorption of calcium, which is why it is so important for the health of the bones and teeth. A deficiency of this vitamin can manifest in thin and brittle bones and many other health problems.

Bone Health

This vitamin facilitates the absorption of calcium from food, as well as the reabsorption of this mineral by the kidneys. Along with calcium, it promotes the absorption of phosphorus from food. Both calcium and phosphorus are important for maintaining bone health. Calcium is required for maintaining bone density, and preventing diseases, like osteomalacia and rickets.

Immune System

It is known to strengthen the immune system. Several studies conducted in this regard have shown that this vitamin can enhance the immune functions, and may prove effective in preventing the development of autoimmune disorders. This vitamin can help treat inflammatory diseases as well.

Neuromuscular System

Vitamin D3 is required for maintaining the functions of the neuromuscular system. This vitamin can provide protection against muscle weakness that usually occurs with aging. A deficiency of this vitamin can manifest in decreased muscle strength in the elderly.

Weight Loss

This vitamin may help reduce weight, if it is combined with regular physical activity and a balanced diet. This vitamin may promote the proper assimilation of food, along with regulating the level of blood sugar. However, the supplements of vitamin D cannot promote weight loss, if these are not supplemented with other necessary lifestyle changes.

Skin

This vitamin is known to possess anti-inflammatory properties. It can help control inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis. It can also promote wound healing, reduce itching, and may help alleviate the skin lesions caused by the conditions, like lichen planus and photodermatitis.

Depression

The relationship between vitamin D3 and depression is not very clear, though one study has reported that the deficiency of this vitamin may raise the risk of depression in both men and women. It can also cause hyperparathyroidism, and depression can be a symptom of this condition.
Apart from these, vitamin D can have several other benefits. This vitamin can help regulate blood pressure, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer. However, like any other supplements, vitamin D3 supplements should also be taken with care, as an overdose can cause certain side effects. These side effects can be avoided by taking the supplements in the appropriate dosage, and under the supervision of a health care provider.
