Spicy Tuna Roll Calories

Arjun Kulkarni
Tuna is a streamlined fish with a high commercial value. It usually has white flesh, however, the color of the muscle tissues of this fish range from pink to dark red. This story provides information regarding the nutritional value of a spicy roll made using this fish.
The spicy tuna roll is a sushi preparation that is typically made from raw fish. Sushi is considered apt for people who are following a weight loss diet. Additionally, this fish is generally a low-calorie, raw fish, with no particular additives, thus it tops the diet menu.
However, sushi in itself can be tasteless, especially for people who essentially need a dash of spices in their preparations. So, this roll is a good option, as it uses a spicy mayonnaise (mayo), which makes all the difference.

Calorie Count

This roll might be a bit higher in its calorie count than the standard sushi. The difference is due to the additional spicy mayo dressing. Alternatively, this roll can be prepared at home, without the mayo dressing, as most of the stores do not prepare/sell the roll without the dressing.
A serving of this roll (8 pieces), bears approximately 290 calories. It must be noted that the FDA has advised pregnant women, women of childbearing age, nursing mothers, and young children (12 years and under) to limit their consumption of albacore tuna to six ounce per week, due to the potential mercury contamination.

Nutritional Facts

Tuna is an excellent source of niacin, selenium, and protein. Some of the selenium is found in the form of selenoneine, which may be especially valuable in terms of its antioxidant properties. It is also a very good source of energy-producing vitamin B6 and thiamin.
In addition, it is a good source of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids (including eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA, and docosahexaenoic acid or DHA), phosphorus and magnesium, and potassium. Thus, the roll also carries the same nutritional value.
Here is break-up of the total calorie content of the roll.
  • Fat: Out of the 290 calories, the fat content is really low. It contains only 11 g of fat. Furthermore, the amount of saturated calories is less than 1 g. This makes it perfect for the diet menu.
  • Carbohydrates: It is rich in carbohydrates. It contains 26 g of carbohydrates and 3.5 g of dietary fiber. Thus, it is a good option for people on a no-carb diet.
  • Protein: This roll is a rich source of protein, as it predominantly consists of fish. The aforementioned roll serving contains about 24 g of proteins.
  • Sodium: It can have very low sodium (i.e., 23 mg) if made fresh, but on the other hand, very high sodium content (i.e., 560 mg), if packaged.
One of the most controversial aspects of this fish is its potential for contamination with mercury. There are other controversies attached as well. So, it is best to purchase fresh tuna from a store that has a good reputation for having a frequent supply of fresh fish. Select tuna types with lower mercury risks.
"Canned light tuna" that specify skipjack or tongol may provide you with lower mercury exposure.
