How to Store Chia Seeds

Listed as one of the 'super foods', chia seeds are easy to store and use. Here are some tips to store them properly.
With more and more entries in the super food list, you may get confused about what to choose. One such food that has gained a lot of recognition is chia seeds. In fact, the health benefits of these seeds have been identified by humans, long back.
It is said that it was cultivated and used by Aztecs (Central Mexico's ethnic people, who lived during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries). Now, once again the use of chia seeds has been revived, as these seeds were found to be highly nutritious.
They are said to offer a wide range of health benefits too. Today, chia is grown commercially, in various parts of the world. You may buy them online or from health stores. Even storing and usage of these seeds are very easy.

Uses of Chia Seeds

As mentioned above, it is the nutritional value of these seeds, that made them so popular, rather than the flavor or taste. These seeds are rich in protein, carbohydrates, omega fatty acids, calcium, phosphorous, manganese and potassium. Even the dietary fiber content in these seeds is very high.
It is said that chia seeds have three times the value of antioxidants found in blueberries and five times the amount of calcium than that of milk. Even the iron content in these seeds are said to be three times as that of spinach.
With all these nutrients and beneficial components, there is no doubt why these seeds are fast gaining popularity as a super food. Chia seed benefits include enhanced energy, good digestion and improving intestinal functions. It is also said to normalize blood sugar levels.
Chia seeds can be consumed in many different ways. These blackish-brown seeds are small in size. Each seed may have a diameter of less than one millimeter. You may consume them as whole seeds, either by sprinkling on salads and other foods or as such. Another method is to grind them and the flour can be used for baking breads and muffins.
Even the flour can be sprinkled on food and can also be added to beverages like smoothies. Chia seed sprouts are also very popular and are used in salads and other dishes. If you love consuming gels, you can prepare it with chia seeds.
All you have to do is to add a cup of seeds to nine cups of water. Mix them well so as to prevent formation of lumps. Wait for half an hour and your chia seed gel is ready to use. You can store the excess gel in the refrigerator.

Tips to Store Chia Seeds Properly

Storing these seeds is no big deal. It is said that though chia seeds contain a good amount of oils, there are very less chances that they turn rancid. This is because of the antioxidant content of these seeds. It will be better to avoid using those with rancid taste
  • Store whole chia seeds in containers (plastic/glass) with secure lids. Make sure to keep these containers in a cool and dark place.
  • If you buy them in large amounts, store a small amount for daily use, in containers. Store the rest in a sealable storage bag (make sure to remove from the bag, as much air as possible) that has to be again stored in a cool, dark location.
  • If you have prepared chia gel in huge amounts, you may store it in the refrigerator, for two weeks. You have to pack the gel in a plastic or glass container with a tight lid.
  • The same method applies to chia flour too. All you have to do is to store chia seed flour in containers with tight-fitting lids. Though, the flour may not turn rancid for some time, it is always better to finish it off as soon as possible.
Though nutritious and healthy, these seeds may cause certain side effects like gastrointestinal problems and allergies. So it is always better to seek the advice of your physician, before consuming them. It is said that, if consumed in correct doses, most of these side effects may not develop at all.
