Healthy and Nutritional Chocolate Chips Cookies

Cookies are normally a big hit with people of all generations. However, we often avoid them, as they do not belong to the healthy category of foods. However, if you know some low calorie chocolate chip cookie recipes, you will not be devoured of your favorite snack.
Chocolate chip cookies can also be made using low calorie ingredients. Although they may not be a real substitute for Brussels sprouts, they can certainly be made more healthier as compared to other junk food we keep eating all the time.
Many times, you may come across cookies in the market labeled as 'fat free', but they may not be as nutritious as they are labeled, since the sugar content in them is always on the higher side. To make them, ingredients such as oatmeal, bran flakes, nuts, whole wheat flour, etc. can be used. You can reduce the fat content in it. Let's see a few recipes.

Wheat Flour Cookies

This is a heart healthy recipe, as the total quantity of butter has been replaced with half butter and half applesauce. Moreover, it also has the goodness of whole wheat flour and wheat germ in it.
  • Whole Wheat Flour, 2 cups
  • Wheat Germ, ¼ cup
  • Baking Soda, 1 tsp.
  • Butter, ½ cup
  • Apple sauce, ½ cup
  • White Sugar, ⅔ cup
  • Brown Sugar, ⅔ cup
  • Vanilla Extract, 1 tsp.
  • Egg, 1
  • Egg White, 1
  • Dark Chocolate Chips, 8 oz.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Mix wheat flour, wheat germ and baking soda in a bowl and keep it aside.
  • With a hand mixer beat butter, apple sauce, and sugar together, till all the ingredients are well blended.
  • Then add in vanilla, egg and egg white to the butter mixture and mix well.
  • Now add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix well till a soft dough is formed.
  • At last add chocolate chips to the dough.
  • Make cookies with rounded tablespoons and place them on the baking sheet.
  • Bake them for about 10 minutes, by alternating the baking sheets halfway.
  • Once the edges are lightly browned, they are ready to be savored.

Oatmeal Cookies

Oatmeal gives you the fiber which is required and you will not feel guilty eating them. This recipe varies from the previous one, as canola oil is used.
  • Rolled Oats, (not the quick cooking) ¾ cup
  • Whole Wheat Flour, 1 cup
  • Baking Soda, ½ tsp.
  • Salt, ½ tsp.
  • Butter, (softened) ¼ cup
  • Canola Oil, ¼ cup
  • Granulated Sugar, ⅓ cup
  • Brown Sugar, ⅓ cup
  • Egg, 1
  • Vanilla Extract, 1 tsp.
  • Chocolate Chips, 1 cup
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. While the oven is heating up, coat 2 baking sheets with cooking spray.
  • Grind the oats in a blender and then transfer them to a bowl.
  • To the oatmeal add whole wheat flour, baking soda and salt, and mix well.
  • In a different bowl beat the butter, till it is nice and fluffy.
  • Then add canola oil, granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla to the butter and beat well again till it is smooth and creamy in consistency.
  • Keep the mixer running and slowly add dry ingredients to the butter mix and keep beating on low speed.
  • Once soft dough is formed, mix the chocolate chips with the dough.
  • Then drop heaping teaspoons of dough on the baking sheet.
  • Bake one sheet at a time. It will take about 10 to 15 minutes for the edges to become brown and the top, golden in color.
  • Let them cool down completely.
In a similar way, you can also make health bars. These can be stored in air tight containers for up to three days. They can also be stored in the refrigerator for a longer period of time, however, make them fresh, instead of eating stored ones.
